The future of gaming is to get players to pay for its development first, then pay for all the cool shit in the game before its even released. In truth gotta admire the non-marketing marketing to do that!
look at destiny - all my mates bought it on ps4 - they havent played an mmo type game before - they are all addicted now. and they are ready to pay for the next content update it gets in a couple months.
5 bucks here and there. anyway. i liked ff14 enough to level like 5 jobs. i liked archeage enough to get to level 2. maybe i'll revisit it later if wildstar totally fails but right now, there isnt any competition. only really looking forward to SC, Elite dangerous, division
The future of gaming is not f2p. look at microsoft and sony - you have to have subscriptions on top of your net subscription to use their online system. the future is getting players to invest in a game and then milking them monthly. the converse strategy is to f2p and nickel and dime people out of
I think retention rate hasn't been good which has been exacerbated by too few players spread too thin across too many servers. After the mega servers are up, coupled with drop 3 and all the system changes they are making will get back a lot of people
The launch servers are healthy - Ascendency, Hazak, etc. The ones they opened up on launch day to counter queues are low though. So free transfers are up and people can move where they like. In 3-6 weeks all servers should be rolled into one per-ruleset, and everyone is on a megaserver.
